I use the term carrying capacity. This and some of your other essays you've linked all point to the economist's assessment of small farms as not viable simply because they compete with the extreme fossil fuel subsidy currently enjoyed by the complex logistics and labor replacement which industrial ag enjoys. Their estimation is too shortsighted. Energy subsidies will be waning sooner than we'd like. Not to speak of the linear once through nutrient use where phosphorus is flushing down our rivers to the sea.<br /><br />I am lucky enough to not have to earn a living from our land, so am slowly working toward the foodscape of the future. The boundary of the future may well be a half day's travel by a horse cart for most supplier consumer transactions.
